A full-day guided sea-kayaking journey along the wild coastline of Fundy National Park

Designed for strong paddlers and curious explorers, the Log Drivers’ Coastal Expedition travels deeper into Fundy’s wild shoreline than any of our half-day tours. Launching with the tides, you’ll spend the day moving steadily along the open coast of Fundy National Park — beneath red sandstone cliffs, past sea caves and sea stacks, and into the quiet river mouths where historic log drives once ended at sawmills.

This is a full-day coastal expedition, guided by the tides and designed for paddlers who want to go farther.

Travelling in small groups with professional guides, we cover real distance — often 15 to 18 kilometres (some paddlers manage more on very calm days!) — adapting our route to the weather, the tides, and the strength of the group. Along the way, we land on remote beaches, interpret the geology and ecology of the Bay of Fundy, and experience the rhythm of the world’s highest tides from water level.

Midday, we stop on a secluded shore for a hot, freshly prepared lunch cooked on the beach, with allergy-friendly and dietary options available. It’s a moment to rest, warm up, and take in a part of the coastline few visitors ever reach.

Because this tour runs inside a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, we travel with care. Our small groups, low-impact landings, and leave-no-trace practices are designed to protect the ecosystems we explore.

Distances vary. Conditions change. No two days are the same.

Why It’s Called the Log Drivers Expedition

Before highways connected these communities, the forests of New Brunswick were linked to the coast by rivers and tides. Log drivers guided vast rafts of timber through these waters toward the sawmills and shipyards that once defined the region.

This tour follows sections of the same coastline where those crews worked, offering a glimpse of the landscapes that shaped Fundy’s maritime history.

Who it’s for

Best suited to active guests who enjoy being active for a full day on the water, are comfortable paddling for several hours with breaks and are looking for a more challenging, immersive experience. Previous kayaking experience is helpful, but not required. Guides provide instruction throughout the day.

1

Arrival

All expeditions begin at Kayak Fundy’s home base in Alma, at the gateway to Fundy National Park. Please arrive 5–10 minutes early to check in, use the facilities, and prepare for the day. Because our routes are carefully timed with the tides, departures run promptly at the scheduled time.
2

Orientation & Outfitting

Once everyone is together, your guide will review the plan for the day, current weather and tide conditions, and what to expect along the coastline. After signing waivers, you’ll be fitted with a PFD and paddling jacket, and issued dry bags for personal items. This is also a good moment to store keys or valuables safely before we head to the boats.
3

Preparation & Launch

At the shoreline, we adjust boats and foot pedals for comfort and control, then review essential paddling technique and safety procedures. Our guides ensure everyone feels confident and ready before we launch. When the tide turns in our favour, we push off together and begin the day’s coastal journey.
4

The Expedition

From here, the day unfolds with the tides. We paddle along Fundy’s dramatic shoreline beneath cliffs, caves, and sea stacks, exploring quiet river mouths and remote beaches rarely reached on shorter tours. Midway, we land for a hot, freshly prepared lunch on a secluded shore before continuing our route along the open coast. Distances and destinations vary with the weather and the strength of the group, making every expedition unique.
5

Return

In the afternoon, we follow the tides back toward Alma, often with new perspectives on the coastline and changing light on the Bay. We land at home base, unpack, and share stories from the day’s journey — a full day on the water inside the Bay of Fundy UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
