Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about guided sea kayaking in Alma, beside Fundy National Park.

Planning Your Visit

What months are you open for tours?

We operate from June 1st through approximately September 20th each year. Our season depends on weather and water conditions.

How long does the entire experience take, including instruction?

Plan for 3.5 – 4 hours total. This includes about 30 minutes for check-in and instruction, plus 2.5 – 3 hours of paddling time on the water.

Where exactly do we meet? Is there parking?

Meet us at our headquarters at 16 Fundy View Drive, Alma, NB. Parking is available in our driveway, to the left of our main building.

When should we arrive for our tour?

Please arrive 10 – 15 minutes early to allow time for parking and check-in. Tour start times are tide-dependent, so it’s important we start on time.

What time of day are tours scheduled?

Tour times are tide-dependent – about 85% of our tours operate at high tide. Depending on the tide schedule, tours may start as early as 8:00 AM or as late as 6:00 PM (finishing by 8:00 PM).

Do I have to make a reservation, or can I just show up?

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially in summer. Tours often sell out because group sizes are small.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least a few days in advance, especially during peak summer months (July – August). Last-minute bookings may be available, but tours often sell out due to our small group sizes.

Is it worth the drive from Moncton or Saint John?

Absolutely! The drive from either Moncton or Saint John takes about 1 to 1.5 hours – well worth it for a unique Bay of Fundy experience. Many guests travel even farther, coming from Halifax, Maine, or northern New Brunswick (Bathurst, Caraquet) specifically for our tours.

Can I visit Hopewell Rocks and kayak with Kayak Fundy on the same day?

Yes. Many guests combine a visit to Hopewell Rocks with a guided sea kayaking tour in Alma, at the entrance to Fundy National Park. Hopewell Rocks is about 45 – 60 minutes from our base, so it’s easy to do both in one day. A popular plan is to kayak at high tide with us, then visit Hopewell Rocks at low tide – usually about five hours later.

Is French spoken on any of your tours?

Yes. We regularly welcome both English- and French-speaking guests, and we always aim to provide bilingual guides.

Physical Requirements & Who Can Participate

I have never kayaked before. Can I still go out?

Absolutely. Many of our guests are first-time paddlers. Our certified guides provide full instruction and all equipment, making our Alma-based tours ideal for beginners.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You do not need to be able to swim. All guests wear properly fitted PFDs (personal flotation devices) at all times on the water.

What fitness level do I need?

Our tours are designed for various fitness levels. The Molly Kool Tour is the easiest option with calm, protected waters. The Search for Matthew’s Head tour involves open-water paddling and can be more challenging when winds pick up. While our guides are experienced at helping all paddlers, reasonable general fitness makes for a more enjoyable experience on bay tours.

What’s the minimum age for your tours?

The Molly Kool Paddle and Riverwalk welcomes paddlers ages 4 and up. Our open-water bay tours, including Search for Matthew’s Head, are recommended for ages 12 and up. On calm days, younger children may be able to join bay tours – please contact us to discuss your family’s specific situation.

What’s the maximum age? Can seniors participate?

There’s no maximum age! As long as you can sit comfortably in a kayak and paddle, you’re welcome. Many of our guests are active seniors who love the experience.

What’s the weight limit for kayaks?

Our double kayaks have a combined weight limit of 400 lbs (180 kg) between two people. If you have concerns about whether our kayaks will work for your group, please give us a call and we’ll help you find the right solution.

I have mobility issues / use a wheelchair. Can I still kayak?

Unfortunately, our tours are not wheelchair accessible. The terrain leading to the waterfront is too rough for wheelchair access, and our tour stops (beaches and upriver islands) present similar challenges.

My children are under the age of 12. Can they join an ocean tour, such as the Search for Matthew’s Head?

On calm days, younger children can sometimes join our open-water tours, including Search for Matthew’s Head. However, when it’s windy, double kayaks can be too challenging to control with a lighter child (especially under 110 lbs / 50 kg) in the front. For younger or lighter children, we often recommend the Molly Kool Tour on the sheltered Salmon River estuary. Not sure which tour is right for your family? Give us a call – we’re happy to help you choose.

What to Expect on the Water

Will I get wet?

Yes, expect to get a little wet from paddle drips and occasional splashes. We provide splash jackets, but your lower body and feet will likely get damp. This is part of the fun!

What’s the water temperature?

Bay of Fundy water is chilly year-round – around 6°C (43°F) in spring, warming to about 15°C (59°F) by August.

How rough is the water? Will I get seasick?

Water conditions on the Bay of Fundy vary with wind and tides. We avoid paddling in winds above Force 4 on the Beaufort Scale (moderate breeze, 20 – 28 km/h winds, small waves with breaking crests). The Molly Kool Tour offers the calmest experience, as it’s protected by trees surrounding the estuary. If you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend taking Gravol at least 30 minutes before your tour – or ask us when you arrive, and we can provide some.

Do people tip over often while kayaking?

Our double kayaks are very stable and rarely tip over. Before every tour, guides provide comprehensive paddling and safety instruction, and we choose routes based on current conditions to keep everyone safe and comfortable. Capsizing is extremely uncommon on our guided tours.

Note: Surfski experiences are different – surfskis are performance craft designed for wave riding, and getting wet is part of the adventure and learning process.

What if someone in my group gets tired or scared?

Communication is key! Let your guide know right away if you’re feeling tired, scared, or unwell. We can assist with a tow-line to give you a break, or if needed, we’ll find the nearest exit point and arrange pickup from our base. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities.

Will we see wildlife? What kind?

Wildlife sightings are common! You’ll likely see eider ducks, bald eagles, cormorants, and various shorebirds. Harbour seals and harbour porpoises occasionally make appearances, though they tend to be shy in our area. Land animals – white-tailed deer, chipmunks, and squirrels – can sometimes be spotted along the shoreline, especially on the Molly Kool Tour.

What kind of kayaks do we use? Can I reserve a single kayak?

During our guided tours, guests paddle in double kayaks (tandems). We do not offer single kayaks for guests.

Can I rent a kayak instead of going on a guided tour?

We focus on guided sea kayaking experiences rather than rentals. On the Bay of Fundy, tides and currents change quickly – local knowledge and real-time decision-making make a big difference for both safety and enjoyment.

Weather & Conditions

Are we going paddling even though it’s raining or windy?

Light to moderate rain doesn’t stop us – kayaking is a water sport, after all! We provide splash jackets for all tours, and paddling in light rain can be beautiful and peaceful. However, thunderstorms and severe weather are different matters. Please note: we cannot accept cancellations within 24 hours due to light rain, but if severe weather forces us to cancel, you’ll have options to reschedule, switch tours, or receive a refund.

How do you decide if conditions are too rough to paddle?

Your safety is our first priority. We continuously monitor wind speeds, wave conditions, and weather forecasts. If conditions become unsafe for your scheduled tour, we’ll contact you to offer three options:

  • Reschedule to another date that works for you
  • Switch to the Molly Kool Estuary Tour, which is protected from high winds
  • Receive a full refund of your deposit (minus third-party booking processing fees)

What to Bring & Wear

What should I wear?

Wear quick-dry outdoor clothing and layers. Avoid cotton. Expect to get a little wet. On cooler days, bring an extra warm layer.

What kind of shoes should I wear?

Footwear is required on all tours. Neoprene water shoes are ideal, but Crocs, water-friendly sandals, or old sneakers work well too. Alma’s history as a shipbuilding community means old nails and tools are sometimes buried in the sand and mud. Sharp barnacles on rocks are another concern. Sturdy water-safe shoes protect your feet during beach stops and shoreline exploration.

What do I need to bring?

Bring weather-appropriate clothing – layers are best. We recommend synthetic fabrics rather than cotton. Water-safe shoes are important. Sunscreen is also a good idea. We provide kayaks, paddles, lifejackets, paddle splash jackets, and safety gear.

Can I bring my phone/camera? Will it stay dry?

You can bring a camera or phone. We provide small dry bags for guest use (and larger dry bags if you wish to pack extra clothes, etc.).

What if I wear glasses or contacts?

Glasses are fine – we recommend a glasses strap. Contact lenses work well too. Bring a backup pair if possible.

Can I bring my own kayak or paddle?

You’re welcome to bring your own paddle or PFD (personal flotation device) as long as it’s Coast Guard approved (UL or ULC certification). However, all guests must use our kayaks and safety equipment. This ensures we can quickly address any mechanical issues on the water and meets our insurance requirements.

Do you provide dry bags for personal items?

Yes, we provide small dry bags for guest use, and larger dry bags are available if you wish to pack extra clothes or other items.

Food, Drinks & Facilities

Is food or water provided on tours?

Yes! We provide water in reusable bottles (washed and sanitized between uses) and snacks during tour breaks. Snacks typically include granola bars, fresh fruit, homemade cookies or muffins, and beverages like fruit juice, coffee, tea, or hot chocolate (depending on the weather). Please let us know about any food allergies when booking so we can provide safe, delicious alternatives.

Can I bring my own snacks or drinks?

Yes, you may bring your own snacks and/or drinks. No alcohol is ever permitted on our tours.

Are there bathroom facilities?

Bathroom facilities are available at our headquarters before and after tours. While on the water, nature calls sometimes happen – using the “facili-trees” (finding a private spot behind rocks or trees) is a normal part of backcountry kayaking!

Booking, Payment & Policies

Are there any extra fees that I will have to pay on top of the listed price?

Yes, a few standard items are added to the listed tour price:

  • HST (Harmonized Sales Tax): 15% (required by law)
  • Booking processing fee: 6% (charged by our reservation partner, FareHarbor)
  • Gratuities: Not included but greatly appreciated. You can add a tip during online booking or give directly to your guide after the tour.
Should I print a receipt to show the tour guide?

No. Your booking confirmation on your phone or in your email is sufficient.

What is your refund and cancellation policy?

Cancellations made at least 24 hours in advance are eligible for a full refund. Please see our Cancellation Policy page for complete details.

Group & Special Bookings

Do you offer private tours or group bookings?

Yes! We welcome group bookings – see our Group Packages page for details and pricing. Private tours are also available with advance notice. We recommend booking early, especially during peak season, as our guides’ schedules fill up quickly with scheduled tours.

Can we book a tour for a corporate team-building event?

Absolutely! Sea kayaking makes an excellent corporate team-building activity. Please contact us well in advance so we can customize an experience that meets your group’s goals and schedule.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes, we offer gift certificates through our online booking partner FareHarbor.

Health & Safety

What if I’m not feeling well on the day of the tour?

If you’re feeling unwell, please contact us as soon as possible. We appreciate your consideration for other guests and staff, and we’ll work with you to reschedule.
